Operation Provide Comfort

Operation Provide Comfort
By James Taranto

Here's something I bet you didn't know...

"For much of the past seven years, President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have waged a clandestine operation inside the White House. It has involved thousands of military personnel, private presidential letters and meetings that were kept off their public calendars or sometimes left the news media in the dark," reports the Washington Times:

Their mission: to comfort the families of soldiers who died fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and to lift the spirits of those wounded in the service of their country. . .

But the size and scope of Mr. Bush's and Mr. Cheney's private endeavors to meet with wounded soliders and families of the fallen far exceed anything that has been witnessed publicly, according to interviews with more than a dozen officials familiar with the effort. . .

Mr. Bush, for instance, has sent personal letters to the families of every one of the more than 4,000 troops who have died in the two wars, an enormous personal effort that consumed hours of his time and escaped public notice. The task, along with meeting family members of troops killed in action, has been so wrenching - balancing the anger, grief and pride of families coping with the loss symbolized by a flag-draped coffin - that the president often leaned on his wife, Laura, for emotional support. . .

Mr. Cheney similarly has hosted numerous events, even sneaked away from the White House or his Naval Observatory home to meet troops at hospitals or elsewhere without a hint to the news media.

For instance, Mr. Cheney flew to North Carolina late last month and met with 500 special-operations soldiers for three hours on a Saturday night at a golf resort. The event was so secretive that the local newspaper didn't even learn about it until three days after it happened.
Mr. Cheney and his wife, Lynne, also have hosted more than a half-dozen barbecues at their Naval Observatory home for wounded troops recovering at Bethesda Naval Hospital and Walter Reed and their spouses and children.

Here's hoping that the Obama administration lives up to the Bush example.

Don't trumpet your good deeds from the housetops, that will be all the reward you will receive.
But if you do it, do it in secret, where only your Father in Heaven can see...then HE will reward you.
Definitely classier...

Obama hasn't even done ONE good thing--he wouldn't touch visiting the troops--so those who make stupid comments about our esteemed president and vice-president can just stuff it.

You're right, TMW--their lack of trumpeting it--as Bammie would/does--makes it all the classier a move.

Les-You are a twit, AND lacking in class or courage.
I have black friends, there are black elders at my church, and their wives are sweethearts.
Sooooo?
I'm more interested in the lack of good character, the questionable associates AND the Chicago Political Machine shenanigans...and the continued trashing of the Constitution.
What are you afraid of? Christ's imminent return? Judgment Day?
I'd be if I were you!

Also, TMW, Les-the Nit-Wit can't get it into his mind that we conservatives would've elected Thomas Sowell president LONG ago... (Or Walter Williams, Shelby Steele, John McWhorter, Ward Connerly etc., etc., etc.)

And he he didn't win by a huge majority--it was only a fraction over that which Bush won--and without all of ACORN'S duplicitous, fraudulent, cheating little help.

Remember, Les-Than-Nothing whenever you wish to think 99% of America voted for The Zero: "A Fad Is Not A Mandate".

The Empty Suit has accomplished nothing in his life and his underhanded politics have ALREADY made him a disgrace.

I can't wait for the most corrupt presidency in the history of mankind to begin. The fact you-all were duped into electing Mr. Nothing has had me laughing for weeks! I never thought you were that stupid, Les! LOL!

Lessy - just like everyone predicted - is trying to use racism to say that's why we mind having Obamaboots president.

This dodge was forecast MONTHS ago and has the intellectual weight of rat droppings.

Come on, Lessy, for all of us who'd gladly put Thomas Sowell (and countless more than I could name) in the White House in a heartbeat, you can come up with a better reason than the ol' 'you jis said dat 'cause I black'.

That's a childish rationale - and it's not even true; 0bama is just as white as he is black, stupid. Maybe you just didn't know that.
