Who Gets Credit for the Rescue of Captain Phillips?

Obama thinks it should be him.

President Barack Obama (D), as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces, is taking credit for the successful rescue of ship captain Richard Phillips, basking in the glow of an absolutely outstanding performance and raw courage of the ship's captain Richard Phillips, the ship's crew and the U.S. Navy under his skilled direction.

However military correspondent Jeff Emanuel at Pajama Media claims the reality is quite different; the inexperienced Obama and his equally inexperienced staff and advisers, committed to a peaceful resolution, needlessly dragged out an incident that, thanks to Phillips' bravery, could have been successfully resolved in a few hours with minimal loss of life.

Instead, because of Obama's dithering, it turned into a drawn out, dangerous confrontation that, ironically, caused the death of three of the Somali pirates, and almost cost Phillips his life.

However, instead of taking direct, decisive action against the rag-tag group of gunmen, the Obama administration dilly-dallied, dawdled, and eschewed any decisiveness whatsoever, even in the face of enemy fire, in hopes that the situation would somehow resolve itself without violence. Thus, the administration sent a clear message to all who would threaten U.S. interests abroad that the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has no idea how to respond to such situations — and no real willingness to use military force to resolve them.

UPDATE: Captain Reportedly Freed, 3 Pirates Dead and One Captured

Congratulations all around to the daring warriors who rescued Captain Richard Phillips and captured one of his captors alive.

I am delighted that President Obama's team did not endlessly equivocate. I credit them with bringing the incident to a close. If they needed time to position assets and plan, I am glad they waited. Update: Reports are that Captain Phillips jumped overboard again.

Fragmentary reports suggest sharpshooters may have opened fire allowing him the escape. It is still unclear if there was an actual rescue operation launched. However the rescue happened, it is wonderful. But who is responsible for taking the initiative? The victim or his rescuers and their bosses? Fox News reports:

'Initial reports indicate Phillips jumped overboard for a second time and the military was able to take advantage of the situation.'

If this is true, at least we can be glad that the Navy was allowed to fire on the terrorists. But if so, it might be too much to credit the Obama administration with decisive action to end the standoff and teach the terrorists a lesson that would help diminish their activity.

On the other hand, if a rescue operation was undertaken, all the better, I remain concerned that the captured terrorist will be treated as a criminal defendant, with all the rights of discovery and other secret-busting apparatus that make criminal action inappropriate for terror groups.

I also suppose he will be provided a Koran, halaal meals, and (naturally) access to both left wing lawyers and Islamic clergy, whose conversations with him will be held beyond the reach of the good guys.

“Just this morning, I received word that a new radical organization calling itself “A New Way Forward” has put together an underhanded sneak attack designed to undercut the popular uprising known as the Tea Party Movement,” Bill Wilson, of Americans for Limited Government (ALG), warned mainstreet Americans yesterday.

“Simply put, their idea is to stage phony rallies throughout the country on April 11--made to look like they are part of the Tea Party movement--while actually opposing Tea Party principles and supporting the complete government takeover of our banking system.”
Memo to mainstream Americans: The far left, masters of hypocrisy and street theatre, will use decoys in “The Way Forward” to pose as YOU in an attempt to undermine and shut down the Tea Party movement.

Just like the Moonbats, they can count on the mainstream media to help them pull off their doublecross.

“`The Way Forward’ scam was conjured up by an Obama activist named Michael Lux,” says Wilson. “Lest anyone try to tell you that Mr. Lux is sincere in saying he wants to “help rebuild the banking system”, don’t you believe it for one single second. Before starting up his new Obama front group, Lux was a high-paid lobbyist for the AFL-CIO, a top executive for the leftwing People for the American Way, and a special assistant at the Clinton White House.”
“His plan now is to divert people’s attention from the April 15 Tea Parties by holding his phony rallies, on April 11th. He knows his fellow left wingers in the mainstream media will go along with his scheme to nationalize our banking system--and that’s why it is up to you and me to expose it for what it is right now!”

“So here is what I am asking you to join me in doing now:

--“Alert your family, friends and neighbors to the fact that the “Way Forward” scam has nothing whatsoever to do with the real Tea Parties;

--“If “Way Forward” sets up one of its phony rallies in your community, organize your own protests and make sure the media knows you are standing up for free enterprise and;

--“Send me any information you can to help expose the “Way Forward” rallies for what they really are--a blatant move to socialize our banking system.

“If Michael Lux and his “Obamunist” comrades have their way, they will nationalize our banks, seize their assets, and place fellow Obama lackeys in the top positions of authority. That’s how ruthless they actually are.”

For those who continue to deceptively hype the “hope, unity, change,” tripe, it's time to consider the numbers. And weigh the risk.

According to a recent Pew Research Center poll, President Obama has earned himself the widest partisan gap in job approval in modern American history. The spread between Democrats and Republicans who approve of Mr. Obama's performance is a staggering 61 points—with a whopping 88% approval from Democrats and a paltry 27% from the GOP.

For a bit of context, here's how other recent Presidents fared at this time during their respective administrations: President Bush earned a 51-point partisan gap in approval between the parties, Clinton had a 45-point gap, George H.W Bush had a 38-point gap, Reagan suffered a 46-point gap, Carter had only a 25-point gap, and even the much-maligned Nixon experienced only a 29-point gap. Mr. Obama's 61-point spread tops the charts – by a full 10 points.

Thus, the mainstream media's much-applauded “era of unity” under Barack Obama is shaping up to be historically divisive. And the fact is, the great divide—which is fast becoming a gaping chasm—may well be the precursor to a looming Balkanization of America.

The real problem is that the present division makes perfect sense. After all, the hyper-partisanship the nation is currently experiencing stems directly from the unbridled vitriol the Democrats enthusiastically birthed and brutally nurtured during the George W. Bush years.

The assault on President Bush—beginning December of 2000 when the Supreme Court ruled him the victor—was rooted in pure, unprecedented venom. For eight long years, Democrats venally stoked the bitter fires of partisan disdain. The “loyal opposition” in America became the loathing opposition. And the days of American unity—regardless of the occupant of the White House—were suddenly declared at an end.

For whatever the reason—Mr. Bush's so-called “theft” of the election, his outspoken religious beliefs, or his obvious lack of Ivy-League Georgetown vocal nuance—those on the left made up their mind to destroy the President from day one.

There was the dour Harry Reid calling President Bush a “liar"and a “loser.” There were congressional Democrats habitually undermining the war effort, with their willing cadre of Code Pink harpies coarsely screeching, “Bush lied, people died.” Day after day, the Democrats' surrogates in the leftwing media declared the President a “pathological-presidential liar or an Idiot-in-Chief.” And leftwing filmmakers like Michael Moore and Oliver Stone ruthlessly ridiculed Mr. Bush on the big screen. Politically. Personally. Endlessly.

In short, before the Bush presidency had even begun, enraged personal vilification became the hallmark of the Democratic Party and its mean-spirited minions.

So, to see this divisiveness now manifesting itself during the first few months of the Obama Administration is not surprising. A tiger doesn't change its stripes – nor do the Democrats change their strategy.

For those on the far left, it is not enough to rule. They must also ruin. Having conquered, they must now divide.

The unfortunate truth is that as President, Barack Obama has not merely welcomed this divide, but has exacerbated it as well. Who can forget Mr. Obama's icy arrogance on January 23rd—a mere two days after being inaugurated—during a private between congressional Democrats and Republicans? In response to a plea by Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) for national unity on the economic front, Obama smugly declared, “I won,” caustically adding, “You just can't listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done … I will trump you on that.”

And what kind of message has Mr. Obama sent by selecting the cynically partisan Rahm Emanuel to be his Chief of Staff? This is, after all, the same man who sent a rotting dead fish carcass to a pollster who rubbed him the wrong way. It is the same man who showed his bipartisan side by routinely referring to Republicans as “tired, incompetent, corrupt.”
And it is the same man of whom Salon magazine wrote:

“On Election Night [2006], 10 minutes after CNN called the House for the Democrats, Emanuel climbed up on a table in DCCC headquarters and addressed his cheering, victory-starved staff, celebrating the party's biggest win since 1992. He wanted to wrap up the campaign with a message for the Republicans.

"'Since my kids are gone, I can say it," he shouted. 'They can go f*** themselves!'"

Moreover, Mr. Obama's Big Government, big-spending liberal initiatives have communicated his arrogant disdain for working with the Republican Party – and his Republican constituents nationwide—in any way whatsoever. It's therefore no surprise that Mr. Obama's approval rating among the GOP continues to plummet to deeper, unforeseen subterranean levels day after day—widening the expansive partisan gulf.

Simply put, President Obama's much ballyhooed “unity” mantra has quickly proven to be a charade. And the American people already know it. Rather than ushering in an era of unity, the 44th President has cynically divided the nation asunder. The numbers don't lie.

One would hope that the Democrats would somehow realize that to continue their deliberate policy of hyper-partisan animus will invariably spell disaster for the country. And their party.

Grasping the larger hope, one would pray that they would soon realize that to continue fostering a septic divide will only lead to Balkanization. And should that occur, as it almost inevitably will, the party bringing it about may one day hearken back with woeful ear to the words of their own icon nearly 50 years ago: “The spoils of victory will be ashes in their mouths.”

The Democrats are destroying America--and Obama is leading the way. Just as we tried to tell everyone before he was elected by that fraudulent group ACORN and unaccounted-for foreign money, Obama hates America and is doing everything he can to take her down.

Alfred Hitchcock dedicated his 1940 film "Foreign Correspondent" to "those intrepid ones who went across the sea to be the eyes and ears of America … who early saw the clouds of war while many of us at home were seeing rainbows."

Kind of brings into focus the old saw that history repeats itself. Only this time, it's our commander in chief who is seeing rainbows -- everywhere except, apparently, in America.
It's bad enough when the George Soros brigades continually disparage America, but it's almost unbearable for the president to do it -- and even worse when he's on foreign soil.

At a town hall meeting with French and German citizens in Strasbourg, France, President Barack Obama proved he hadn't just been posturing on the campaign trail when he castigated then-President George W. Bush for his "unilateralist" foreign policies. It's now clear that Obama wanted not only the American electorate to understand his disdain for his predecessor and the country he led but also the rest of the world to know it.

He told his European audience: "It's always harder to forge true partnerships and sturdy alliances than to act alone. … In America, there's a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world. Instead of … seeking to partner with you … there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive."

It bears repeating that contrary to this tired line of liberal propaganda, President Bush diligently tried to "forge true partnerships and sturdy alliances," especially in building his case to attack Iraq to depose dictator Saddam Hussein. He did not dismissively disregard our allies (though many dismissively disregarded us); he painstakingly pleaded with them to join us in removing this brutal menace.

You're darn right it's hard to forge true partnerships and sturdy alliances, particularly with nations that have corrupt financial relationships with the dictator they should be helping you topple.

But Obama is obviously blind to such complicating realities, his vision being obstructed by his disbelief in America's righteousness and his reflexive inclination to side with our foreign critics.

U.S. presidents traveling abroad are generally mindful they are standing on the shoulders of forefathers who built the greatest nation on Earth on the principles of freedom, hard work, accountability, capitalism and belief in the potential of the individual. They understand their calling to live up to the excellence of the legacy entrusted to them.

But like a spoiled trust-fund baby putting on airs, and with little understanding of his predecessors’ contributions, success, genius and courage, which built what warrants this respect reserved for greatness, Barack Obama makes his first foray into serious international affairs at the G-20 summit in London this week representing a nation lessened by his promised “change” that is destroying the legacy of those who built the business of America.

Our forefathers believed America’s enterprise is business, commerce and the creation of wealth and opportunity, rather than the source of cash for government programs and bailing out failures.

They built our strength, which empowers us to protect ourselves and those around the globe who need our help.

From the Obama power grab at General Motors to the politically correct neutering of accurate labeling of murderous terrorists that can result in lulling us into a pre-Sept. 11 sense of faux security, topped by military spending shortfalls in the Obama budget, the United States is weakened daily. Obama’s commitment to punish success with draconian confiscatory taxation underscores the need for our leaders to have a clearer understanding of where taxes come from before being in a position to determine how they are spent.

Obama’s disturbing “never let a crisis go to waste” philosophy facilitates an agenda not to ensure the greatness of the U.S. — our wealth, freedom and ability to help others around the world, therefore earning their respect and gratitude every day. No — Obama’s agenda is to exploit an economic crisis and create further chaos as a diversion so he can employ a leftist agenda to remake America. Naively, Obama assumes he will endlessly reap the benefits of our forefathers’ grit, guts and genius while making no effort to expand or emulate those qualities. In Obama’s world, Daddy’s trust fund is a limitless credit card on which to party.

Obama’s traveling entourage to the London G-20 summit is sizable enough, befitting a U.S. president. But like the nation he serves, his travel staff is diminished from that of previous presidents. Somehow it seems fitting. He is systematically diminishing our greatness, our superpower status, our ability to aid other countries and serve as a crowning jewel of freedom, democracy, capitalism and strength. This weakness has created a vacancy in global leadership, and the world leaders meeting with Obama understand this perfectly. Obama exhibits the self-assuredness of past U.S. presidents, but the clout may be fading.

It’s long been said that when America sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold.

Thanks to Barack Obama, soon when America sneezes, we may be lucky if the rest of the world so much as offers us a hanky.
